Honoré Laval

Honoré Laval, SS.CC., (born ''Louis-Jacques Laval''; 5/6 February 1808 – 1 November 1880) was a French Catholic priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (also known as the Picpus Fathers), a religious institute of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the official representative of France, functioning as Governor.〔
Laval was focused on creating "a settlement of God" in the Gambier Islands. Thousands of local Polynesians died during his despotic reign which began after his arrival in 1834 and lasted until 1870, when the Prince Regent of Mangareva asked the French government to end the protectorate. 〔(Father Honore Laval )〕 In 1871, Laval was deported from Mangareva to Tahiti by the French authorities, tried for murder and declared insane.
During his reign, the population decreased from 12,000 to just 500. He created prisons and instituted forced labor to build more than 100 buildings of stone and coral. The oversize St. Michael's Cathedral in Rikitea, is part of his legacy.
